Manage Your Home on the Go
October 8, 2015
In today’s technology world, you can pretty much do anything from your mobile device – including managing your home. At e2 Homes, we love the convenience of technology, but we are always conscious of the cost. While some of our clients do splurge on fully-integrated home monitoring systems, there are several cost-effective smart home systems and apps that can control your laundry cycle, garage door, energy consumption, among others.
Nest® Learning Thermostat - Whirlpool
One of the most popular technologies on the market today is the Nest® Learning Thermostat. Although it’s been out for a while, the teams at Nest continuously come up with new and innovative ways to make life a bit easier, while also helping to save homeowners money.
One of the newest integrations with the Nest system is its partnership with Whirlpool. By leveraging its ability to know when a homeowner is at home or away, Whirlpool’s new line of washers and dryers with Smart 6th Sense Live™ Technology are able communicate with the Nest® Learning Thermostat - allow for a more energy efficient washing and drying experience. When set on “Away” mode, the washer kick into its FanFresh® mode after finishing it’s washing cycle, gently drying the clothes and allowing fresh air to flow into the unit.
In addition, homeowners are able to save energy with longer, more efficient drying cycles when they are away, while also auto-delaying laundry cycles during energy rush hours. These small, innovative conveniences can make a large impact.
Another device that syncs with the Nest® Learning System is the MyQ garage door monitoring system. Compatible with both LiftMaster and Chamberlain, the MyQ sensor (~$49) is WiFi-based and provides piece of mind for any homeowner wondering if the garage door was put down when leaving the house. The MyQ sensor also comes with a free mobile app, which enables you to both monitor and control the garage door remotely – providing access to guests or keeping track of what time people have left. Finally, because of it’s ability to connect with Nest, the MyQ will communicate to the thermostat when the homeowner has left or is arriving back home – adjusting the temperature in the house accordingly.
There’s nothing better than being able to monitor your home security system through a mobile app from anywhere in the world, while also saving energy at the same time. One app we use for several of our clients is Alarm.com. This company has found a way to combine several smart home features we into one platform. Not only do they offer a simple, secure solution for homeowners, they recently launched the Smart Thermostat using Geo-Services, which provides real-time communication between mobile devices signed in through the app. The new Alarm.com Smart Thermostat seamlessly integrates between its home security platform and thermostat using mobile location-based technology to adjust lights, heating/cooling and send security notifications, as necessary. For example, if you forget to close the garage door when leaving the house, the Alarm.com app will notify you when driving away. In addition, it’s security sensors within the home send signals to the thermostat should any window be left open, so excessive heating or cooling costs don’t occur.
Wi-Fi-based doorbells haven’t been around too long, but they are great tools and easy to set up. Although they may not save on energy costs, they do provide an added sense of security for any parent. With a built-in camera, homeowners can see and talk to whom is on the other side of the door straight from their mobile device. In addition, Wi-Fi-based doorbells such as these also provide homeowners the ability to allude that they are home by “answering the door” and communicating directly with the person on the other end, when in fact they might be miles away – making this two-way communication system a family-friendly option.
At e2 Homes, we’re always on the hunt for new, innovative technologies that we can integrate into our clients’ homes. In today’s busy lifestyle, it’s always nice to have the ease of managing your home on the go, which is why the above products are great examples for all of us. Their inexpensive price point and energy saving solutions make it easy to adopt and enjoy.
